Is it safe to buy a used MMO disc/key code?

I've seen quite a few MMOs lately for sale that are used. My spidey sense starts to tingle when it comes to buying something like this because of the key codes that often come with the game. Does anyone know if it's a bad idea to purchase a used game? Are there problems inherent with someone else already knowing the key code?
