SO my bf bought me a ring........?

My bf and I have been dating for about 9 months. Over the past 9 months he has owed me about 1000 dollars. Now, he has absolutely no money and all the money he gets for his job is spent on gas and food and rent. however, when he got a paycheck, he spent all $200 on buying me a ring. I thought it was so sweet until he told me that this counts as paying me back $200. I feel like i'm buying my own ring :'( He says i'm being unnapreciative and that he "sees how much the ring really means to me":'( His he right?
