Why is gold considered valuable?

Would someone please explain to me the inherent value of gold? If the whole world collapsed, what good would gold do for you? It is a weak, soft metal, and it can't feed, clothe or shelter you. It really is a vain and worthless element. So.. What's the deal? How can the entire American currency be backed by it? It's just so...useless!
